WHO IS HE?
Jamey Carroll is one of a list of former major league baseball players born and raised in Indiana. He is a southern Indiana boy, growing up in Newburg and attending Castle High School. From Castle, he went on to John A. Logan junior college before transferring to the University of Evansville. From there he would end up being drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 14th round of the 1996 amateur draft. He made his major league debut on September 11th 2002 for those Expos and he has the unique distinction of scoring the last run for the Expos franchise, before they relocated to Washington D.C. to become the Nationals. Jamey had a 12 year big league career spanning 7 teams (Expos, Nationals, Rockies, Indians, Dodgers, Twins and Royals).
Below is a video that details Jamey's visit back to his alma mater the University of Evansville and his message to the players. In this video he tells a little about himself, but he goes into some key points of what he thinks will make a better baseball player. He talks about showing respect and dealing with failures. Jamey tells the unique story of how he was able to be drafted and what he did that impressed a scout. He also talks about the importance of being a good teammate and how important it is to become a better man.
This next video is part 2 of the ACES INSIDER, a video produced by the University of Evansville. This video takes a deep dive into Jamey Carroll the person. How he started as the "Runt of the Litter" a 5ft nothing 170lbs of nothing into a big league life. He talks about his trials and tribulations in that journey and how the journey came to an end.
Like many young ballplayers across America, Carroll had a Don Mattingly “Hit Man” poster in his room at home. Amazingly, Mattingly later became Carroll’s hitting coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010 and manager in ’11.
Nice words from the "Hit Man" Don Mattingly on having Jamey Carroll on the Los Angles Dodgers.
