The Brownsburg Bulldog Way
When a person thinks of Brownsburg High School and professional athletes usually baseball comes to mind. And why not? From 2003-2005 the Bulldogs made 3 appearances in the 4A baseball state finals, winning it all with an undefeated record in 2005. That 2005 team had two players that went on to reach the major leagues and it just so happens that the batboy on that team eventually made it to the majors as well. We will talk about them in a minute, but is Brownsburg only known for baseball, is this high school located west of Indianapolis just a baseball factory? Or, does this school have more professional athletes that have paved a path onto the professional fields of other sports. In a five year period (from 2005-2009), Brownsburg High School had 7 athletes graduate that eventually made it to the highest levels of their sports. 2005 Lance Lynn- Baseball
Lance might be the most famous of the seven athletes and he just happened to be the number one pitcher on that undefeated 2005 baseball team. In high school, he made 3 trips to the state finals, was an all-state member as well as making the 2005 All-Star team. He was drafted out of high school by Seattle, but decided to attend Ole Miss University instead. Lynn was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2008 draft and made his major league debut on June 2, 2011. Lance spent several seasons with the Cardinals, establishing himself as a reliable starting pitcher and earning an All-Star selection in 2012. Over the course of his career, Lynn has also played for several other MLB teams, including the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox. Known for his durability and consistency, Lynn has been a reliable starting pitcher throughout his career, regularly logging high innings totals and strikeouts. Lynn has garnered accolades for his performances, including being named an All-Star multiple times and receiving votes for the Cy Young Award. 2007 Chris Estridge - Soccer
Chris Estridge is a former professional soccer player who played as a defender. Chris played college soccer at Indiana University (IU) from 2007 to 2011. During his time at IU, Estridge was a key player for the Hoosiers, earning several accolades and helping the team to successful seasons.
Estridge was selected by Sporting Kansas City (formerly known as the Kansas City Wizards) in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft. He made his professional debut for Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer (MLS) during the 2012 season. Estridge also had stints with other professional soccer clubs, including the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the United Soccer League (USL) and the Indy Eleven in the North American Soccer League (NASL). Throughout his professional career, Estridge primarily played as a defender, known for his athleticism and defensive skills.
While Chris Estridge's professional soccer career was relatively short-lived, he made significant contributions to the teams he played for and represented Brownsburg on the professional soccer stage. 2007 Drew Storen- Baseball
Another member of that 2005 undefeated baseball team was its number 2 pitcher behind Lynn, Drew Storen. Storen, too, was an All-State and All-Star while in high school. Like Lynn, Drew was drafted out of high school, but this time by the New York Yankees and he too decided to attend college. Storen attended Stanford University in California where he played two years, making it to the College World Series as a freshman. He was a draft eligible sophomore and was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the first round of the 2009 draft.
He made his MLB debut with the Washington Nationals on May 17, 2010. Storen spent several seasons with the Nationals, serving as a relief pitcher and later as their closer. He had a successful tenure with the Nationals, earning an All-Star selection in 2011. Storen also had stints with other MLB teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, and Cincinnati Reds. Throughout his MLB career, Storen was known for his fastball-slider combination and his ability to pitch effectively in high-leverage situations. While Drew Storen's professional baseball career was marked by various highs and lows, he made significant contributions as a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. 2008 Gordon Hayward- Basketball
Hayward was a 2008 Brownsburg graduate who also won a state championship his senior year. He was a 2-time all-state tennis player in addition to his skill on the hardwood. He made the game-winning shot in the 4A state championship in basketball over Marion high school. Gordon was an All-State player and was on the Indiana All-Star team in 08 where they beat the Kentucky All-Star team. From high school he went on to Butler University.
Gordon Hayward played college basketball at Butler University from 2008 to 2010. He gained national attention during the 2010 NCAA Tournament when he helped lead Butler to the championship game. Hayward's buzzer-beater attempt in the championship game narrowly missed, and Butler lost to Duke University in a closely contested game.
Gordon was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 9th overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He played for the Utah Jazz from 2010 to 2017, establishing himself as a versatile forward and a key player for the team. In 2017, Hayward signed with the Boston Celtics as a free agent, joining the team in hopes of competing for an NBA championship. Hayward's tenure with the Celtics was marked by injuries, including a devastating ankle injury in his first game with the team that sidelined him for the majority of the 2017-2018 season. Despite the setbacks, Hayward continued to contribute to the Celtics and regained his form as a valuable player. In 2020, Hayward signed with the Charlotte Hornets as a free agent. Throughout his NBA career, Gordon Hayward has been known for his scoring ability, playmaking skills, and versatility on both ends of the court. He has represented the United States in international basketball competitions and has been recognized for his contributions to the sport.

2008 Julian Mavunga- Basketball
Also on that 2008 state champion basketball team was Julian Mavunga. Julian was the player that tipped the ball to Hayward for the game winning shot. Mavunga hasn’t reached the heights of Hayward in basketball, but he is a professional nonetheless. Julian Mavunga played college basketball at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was a standout player for the RedHawks. During his college career, Mavunga earned several accolades and distinctions for his performance on the court.
After graduating from college, Julian Mavunga pursued a professional basketball career, playing for various teams in international leagues. Mavunga has played in countries such as Greece, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Japan, among others. He has competed in leagues such as the Greek Basket League, Italian Serie A, German Basketball Bundesliga, and Belgian Pro Basketball League. Mavunga has showcased his versatility as a forward and his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game, including scoring, rebounding, and playmaking.
While Julian Mavunga may not have achieved widespread recognition compared to players in the NBA or other prominent basketball leagues, he has had a successful career playing professionally overseas. Chris Jones- Football
Chris Jones, a defensive tackle, graduated from Brownsburg High School before playing college football at Bowling Green State University. In 2011, he was named to the All-Mid-American Conference first team.
He was selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft and has played for multiple NFL teams. Those NFL teams include the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. He played in 41 career NFL games and recorded 9 total sacks and 102 total tackles.

2009 Tucker Barnhart- Baseball
The last player on the list is another baseball player, Tucker Barnhart. Tuck’s path to the big leagues was a little different than his two other fellow baseball players on this list. Tucker was drafted out of high school by the Cincinnati Reds and he signed. However, before being drafted he did here the distinction of being named Indiana’s Mr. Baseball his senior year.
Tucker Barnhart was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. He worked his way up through the Reds' minor league system, playing for various minor league affiliates. Barnhart made his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds on April 3, 2014. He has primarily served as a catcher for the Reds, known for his defensive skills, game-calling ability, and leadership behind the plate. Throughout his MLB career, Barnhart has garnered recognition for his defensive prowess, winning the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for National League catchers twice, in 2017 and 2020. Those Gold Glove awards paired well with his 2011 minor league Gold Glove award for best catcher in all of the minor leagues. Offensively, Barnhart has also shown consistency, contributing with his bat as well as his glove.
